Trump’s 69th week brought updates on the economy, immigration and abortion rights. As anti-immigrant sentiment continues, Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz announced it will close in June, raising implications as Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks resigned. At the same time, as tensions with Iran continue, Trump proposed suspending the federal gas tax amid rising prices, raising implications as the trade war continues.
Meanwhile, as backlash to abortion rights continues, the Supreme Court preserved telehealth access to mifepristone, following a previous report from The Introspective detailing a federal appeals court blocking access to the drug.
Immigration and Alligator Alcatraz
As anti-immigrant sentiment continues, Florida announced that its Alligator Alcatraz detention center will close in June, raising implications as 1,400 detainees remain.
“As Gov. DeSantis stated last week, the South Florida detention facility was always intended to serve as a temporary facility to support ongoing illegal immigration enforcement and detention operations,” said Stephanie Hartman, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM), to The Introspective.
“If federal operational needs evolve and the Department of Homeland Security implements alternative plans for the South Florida detention facility, the state will pivot accordingly.”

This comes as Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks resigned, following a previous report from The Introspective detailing Kristi Noem stepping down as homeland security secretary.
“It’s just time,” Banks said to Fox News.
“I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure, disastrous, chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen,” he added.
“Time to pass the reins, 37 years, it’s time to enjoy the family and life.”

Abortion and Gas Tax
As backlash to abortion rights continues, the Supreme Court preserved telehealth access to mifepristone, with Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissenting.
“The court’s unreasoned order granting stays in this case is remarkable,” Alito wrote in his dissent.
“What is at stake [is the] perpetration of a scheme to undermine our decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 597 U.S. 215 (2022), which restored the right of each state to decide how to regulate abortions within its borders,” he added, referring to Dobbs v. Jackson, the ruling that repealed Roe v. Wade.
At the same time, Trump suggested suspending the federal gas tax as the war in Iran continues.
“I think it’s a great idea,” he said to CBS News.
“Yup, we’re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we’ll let it phase back in.”

This comes as gas prices rose 50% since the war began.
