Trump’s 86th week brought updates to health care, Supreme Court decisions and Iran. This comes as Trump promised $500 checks to people enrolled in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, alleging the Biden administration overcharged enrollees. At the same time, the Supreme Court blocked a Missouri congressional map that favored Republicans, raising implications as the midterm elections approach. Meanwhile, as the Iran war continues, a meeting set to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was postponed, raising implications as the meeting would have happened without U.S. involvement. 

ACA, Supreme Court, Iran  

The Trump administration promised $500 rebate checks to more than a million people enrolled in the Affordable Care Act, alleging the former Biden administration overcharged enrollees. 

“President Donald J. Trump announced that the federal government will return to the American people hundreds of millions in Obamacare overcharges, collected by the Biden Administration, by issuing refunds of $500 per person to nearly 1 million Americans in 30 states,” read a fact sheet on the White House’s website, with the states mentioned being “Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.” 

The White House later claimed that the Biden administration “accumulated a significant surplus of funds that were not used to benefit the Americans who paid these higher premiums.”

In a statement, Brad Woodhouse, executive director of advocacy group Protect Our Care, called the rebate plan “an absolute joke.” 

“Since Republicans took away tax credits from working families, millions of people have seen their monthly premiums rise by hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars,” he said. 

“At a time when people are scraping by to keep up with the high cost of groceries, rent, and health care, this $500 gimmick won’t even begin to dig them out of the hole that Trump and Republicans created.” 

This comes as 19 million people received insurance through the Affordable Care Act. 

At the same time, the Supreme Court blocked a Missouri congressional map, called Proposition A, that favored Republicans, raising implications as the midterm elections approach. 

“The law is the law, the Missouri constitution is clear as was the Missouri Supreme Court,” said Richard von Glahn, executive director of advocacy group People Not Politicians. 

“Over 305,000 Missouri voters, Republicans, Democrats and Independents took action to block this political power grab last fall. People, not politicians, will have the final say when they vote NO on Proposition A this November.” 

Meanwhile, as the Iran war continues, a meeting set to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was postponed, raising implications as the meeting would have happened without U.S. involvement. 

“In the interests of consensus the regional meeting set for tomorrow in Salalah has been postponed,” wrote Badr Albusaidi, foreign minister of Oman, in a statement obtained by The Introspective. 

“We remain committed to fostering dialogue that supports stability and lasting cooperation in our region.” 

This comes as the war reaches seven months, with the status of the Strait of Hormuz in limbo.
