Trump’s 78th week brought continued tensions with Iran, another ICE shooting, anti-immigrant sentiment, and voter fraud allegations. This comes as two U.S. soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack in Jordan, raising implications as the war reaches its fifth month. At the same time, following a previous report from The Introspective detailing Lorenzo Salgado Araujo being shot and killed in Houston, another man, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was shot and killed by ICE in Maine, raising implications as anti-immigrant sentiment continues. The Trump administration later announced a limit on how long international students can stay in the U.S.
Following the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, his younger sister, Darline Graham, was sworn in to finish her late brother’s term. Meanwhile, Trump announced the release of documents alleging fraud in the 2020 election.
Iran, ICE, and Immigration
As the war with Iran continues, two U.S. service members were killed in an Iranian strike in Jordan, with a third service member missing.
“On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks,” U.S. Central Command wrote on X.
“Additionally, one service member is currently missing.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later acknowledged the attack, writing, “Godspeed, heroes.”
“Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”
This comes as the war in Iran reaches its fifth month, raising implications over the status of the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, as anti-immigrant sentiment continues, 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Guerrero was shot and killed by ICE in Maine, a week after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed by ICE in Houston.
“On July 13, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m. ET, ICE was conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal alien with a final order of removal. An illegal alien departed the residence in a vehicle. ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop,” the Department of Homeland Security wrote in an X post, despite later saying he was not the intended target.
“The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon,” the post continued.
“The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries.”
In a statement, the Colombian Embassy said it “regrets the death of a Colombian national in Biddeford, Maine, and is providing the necessary consular assistance to his family.”
“The Embassy has requested information and clarification from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the circumstances surrounding this lamentable death and will continue to follow the case closely as the investigation progresses,” the statement read.
In a report by NPR, Scott Collins, a former friend of David Brouillette, the agent who allegedly shot and killed Guerrero, said he had a history of violence and racism, raising implications as his ex-wife, Ashley Brouillette, called him a “danger to society.”
“He has displayed racism. His nickname in high school was ‘White Boy David,’ if that tells you anything,” he said.
Ashley later said he called her after the shooting, asking her to say good things about him. She later refused.
“He asked me to basically talk good in his character, not to talk bad about him. And if I couldn’t not talk bad about him, then just not to talk at all to anybody,” she said.
“And I told him that I was not going to lie for him. He asked me not to talk about the abuse in our marriage. And I told him again I was not going to lie for him.”
She later said that during their marriage from 2007 to 2009, there were various instances of domestic abuse, later adding that he threw their daughter through a glass coffee table in 2022 and had his firearms temporarily stripped in 2021.
“There was an incident where we had been fighting, and I walked away and I got in the shower, and he comes in with a gun and pointed at me and tells me that he’s going to blow my brains all over the bathtub,” she said.
“David always intimidated me. It’s part of the reason why I stayed silent all these years about things that I’ve gone through.”
DHS later suspended traffic stops following the shooting. However, President Trump later overturned the suspension.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration announced a limit on how long international students can stay in the U.S.
“For nearly half a century, the outdated ‘duration of status’ system has compromised national security and created an environment ripe for immigration fraud,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin wrote in a press release.
“For decades, foreign students have been admitted into the U.S. indefinitely, allowing thousands to abuse our immigration system by perpetually enrolling in courses to avoid having to leave the U.S. By implementing clear, finite limits on these visas, the United States is reclaiming its ability to properly screen, vet, and monitor individuals within our borders. This final rule ensures that foreign students remain focused on their primary purpose: completing their studies and returning home.”
Voting and Lindsey Graham
During a prime-time address Thursday, Trump announced documents that he alleges show fraud in the 2020 election and election interference by China.
“America is back and doing really well, but we still have a major challenge that must be urgently addressed because no country can be great without fair and honest elections. You have to trust your country,” Trump said.
“Because if there can be no trust, there can be no greatness, and that’s very simple: no trust, no greatness.”
This comes as Trump encouraged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which requires proof of citizenship and a photo ID to vote in federal elections.
